The tyranny that dares not speak its name

If there is any ideology extant in my lifetime more thoroughly discredited and less defensible than Neoconservatism, I cannot imagine what that is. (Objectivism, possibly?) And William Kristol is perhaps the foremost proponent of Neoconservatism outside of government, having founded both the Project for the New American Century and The Weekly Standard.

Cruel and unusual

Last weekend Bush vetoed a bill (H.R. 2082, the Intelligence Authorization Bill) that would have outlawed the use of waterboarding and other methods of torture by the CIA and others. The House is expected to highlight the veto by attempting a vote on overriding it.

The tragic life of William F. Buckley, Jr.

There is something appealing about William F. Buckley, Jr., even if he did his best during his long career to make the USA uninhabitable. His dream of the beautiful corporatist society totally interrupted any view of anything that stood in the way of his ideological dogma: If it is corporatist, it has got to be good. If it is made in America, it is a shining example of corporate benevolence; if it is made in the Soviet Union, it is prima facie evil in its intent.

Let's get unified

Yes, let's.

This is so ugly, and so unnecessary.

Why Barack Obama?

I started out supporting John Edwards in this cycle, for a couple of reasons. I had supported him in '04, and I liked his populist message. I think this country needs a great big dose of populist politics right now. Edwards' articulation of the "Two Americas" was dead on accurate, and still is.

Obama all talk?

Here's a fantastic new diary over at DKos that should help convince anyone that the criticism that Obama is a talker not a doer is nothing but talk itself.

Now can we put that nonsense about "Obama is just an orator" to rest once and for all? Good!

19 percent

We're shrinking the hard-core Bushies down to a size where we could drown them in the bathtub.

The current numbers represent a precipitous drop from just a month ago. Where are all these people going once they've deserted the sinking ship that is BushCo? Why, to the Dems, of course, and Barack in particular!

We have seen this before...

...but it still confounds me. With 70% of the vote counted in Wisconsin (11pm Eastern time), Hillary has several thousand more votes than all the Republican candidates combined - and she's getting beat by Obama by more than 15 points!

Bill Press goes after Obama

Here's the email I just sent to Bill Press, who on his radio show this morning offered the accusations that Obama in his speech Saturday night compared himself to M. L. King, Jr., FDR, and Abe Lincoln, and plagiarized a speech by Deval Patrick from 2006.

That attack on Obama this morning was kind of a stretch, don't you think?

are the old guard Dems going to screw it up?

No doubt about it, the Dems are positioned perfectly right now. I also have no doubt that they are capable of screwing it up royally. In addition to the specter of the superdelegates, and the potential for a disastrous contravention of the will of the rank and file they represent, floating over us, we now have the Hillary campaign actively working to get the Florida and Michigan delegates seated at the convention. (Hillary wants the Michigan vote to count, and those delegates seated, despite the fact that Obama's name wasn't even on the ballot in that state.)
